“Does this work with my Alexa?” is by far the most common question we get about smart home products. Behind it is actually a bigger question: which standard is inside the device, and what does that mean for expanding the system later?
Wi-Fi: the simplest way in
Most affordable starter products, including the HomeLink Smart Plug 4-Pack, connect directly to your home Wi-Fi – no extra hub needed. That makes setup simple, but it has two limits: every device takes up its own Wi-Fi slot on the router, and with a lot of devices, older routers can get noticeably strained. For getting started with a handful of plugs or a camera like the NestCam Indoor, that’s rarely a real problem in practice.
Zigbee: more devices, but a hub is required
Zigbee devices don’t talk directly to your router; they communicate over their own radio bridge (a hub), which is in turn connected to your Wi-Fi. The upside: dozens of devices barely load your home network, and the standard is optimized for low power draw – ideal for battery-powered sensors. The downside: without a matching hub (often tied to a specific brand), nothing works at all.
Matter: the attempt to unify everything
Matter isn’t a radio standard like Zigbee; it’s a shared “language” meant to let devices from different manufacturers talk to each other and to Alexa, Google Home, or Apple Home at the same time, without locking you into one ecosystem. In practice, implementation in 2026 is still inconsistent: some manufacturers add Matter support later via update, others don’t at all.
Our take for getting started
If you want to smart-control a lamp or outlet for the first time, simple Wi-Fi devices get you there fastest and don’t cost you money on a hub you might not even need. Only once you notice you’re adding more than roughly ten devices, or your Wi-Fi noticeably slows down, is it worth considering a Zigbee system with a hub.
